The mythical Hope Pass was about to get real. But before that we had to
cross meadows, swamps, and even a river. We had to walk through water 5,6
times, before the climb toward Hope Pass starts. When I hit the trail, it
became immediately obvious that this will be hiking, not running (unless you
are Kilian Jornet or Anton Krupicka, perhaps). I had hiked up 14ers in each
of the previous three weekends, and was full of confidence when it comes to
hiking. I was going up faster than everyone around me. A runner said to me,
"you must be from around here." I said, "no, I live in Boston". But then I
explained that I spent the previous four weeks in Aspen, and so he wasn't
exactly wrong. The full altitude acclimation definitely gave me a huge
advantage on the uphills compared to those coming in from sea level. But
some times a good thing can turn into a bad thing. I should have known: in
an ultra, the oxygen intake ability is rarely the bottleneck. Rather, the
bottleneck is almost always the pure muscle endurance, how much beating your
legs can take before they are destroyed by inflammation.
Whenever the trail is not rocky and relatively flat, I would run a little
bit. Nobody around me were able to run those sections. I told a runner next
to me, "gotta run while it is still flat!" He replied, "nah, I would just
rest." The climb became harder as we went past the tree line (around 11,
600ft in my hiking experience), but it was alright. The view at Hope Pass is
spectacular. But I had seen enough 14ers that I did not feel the need to
enjoy the scenery.
The volunteers at the Hope Pass aid station had Llamas carry food and drink
up there. Beautiful creatures. I refilled my waterbottles, climbed over Hope
Pass, ready for the descent. On the other side of Hope Pass, it was A LOT
steeper than I had expected, and A LOT more technical than I had thought it
would be. There were sections of big rock piles that were completely
impossible to run on. I could not run at all for most part, on the way down.
At around 48 miles, when we finally got off the mountain and got on the
dirt road toward Winfield, I wasn't feeling too good. But I was feeling good
, for 48 miles. Most runners were walking, but I was still shuffling my feet
. I felt a little depleted though. The 10.5 miles from Twin Lakes to
Winfield took just over 3:10, and I would spend around 20 minutes in the aid
station, ate several cups of noodle soup with potato and used the restroom.
By the time I came out, I felt much better and totally fresh, so it seemed.
I met FFF on the way out of Winfield, who was stuck in traffic, driving into
the aid station. She told me that serendip was more than an hour behind me
at Twin Lakes already. Holy cow. I was a little worried about serendip at
that point, wondering where I would meet him on the way back to Hope Pass. I
thought maybe the cross country flats were slowly him down on the technical
sections. It turned out, of course, that he was running a smart race and
saving his energy. I saw a girl running into Winfield, crying liked a maniac
as she ran. Damn. At least I never felt that horrible. Yet.
I would meet serendip on the way up. He looked in fine shape. It started to
rain a little bit. The climb to Hope Pass from the Winfield side is VERY
steep. Just walking would run most runners out of breath. A girl and her
pacer, however, went hiking up effortlessly while chatting casually. I asked
, "you must be from around here, aren't you?" And I was right, they lived in
Colorado and had long been used to the altitude.
By the time I got to the Hope Pass aid station, which is a little below the
Pass, on the Twin Lakes side, my hands felt tingly. It was an altitude
reaction. I didn't paid much attention to it. I was going below 12,000ft
anyway. But then the rocky downhill trail became challenging. My left shin
showed signs of weakness and my toes were hurting - I could feel that my
toenails were about to fall off. I got passed by a number of runners on the
way down, not because lack of stamina, but because of lack of trail running
skills and lack of muscle strength at this point. But once I got to the flat
meadows, I felt alright. I was excited to see FFF at Twin Lakes again. She
carried my bottles and ran with me for a little bit, and helped me change my
socks which had turned black, soaked in mud.
The 20 miles from Twin Lakes to Winfield and back to Twin Lakes took 7 hours (including time spent at twin
lakes aid station). Slow but expected. I felt good. 25 hours sounds all too easy. FFF told me
that I could make 25 hours by simply running the next 40 miles in 10 hours,
or 15 minute pace. I thought I could surely do better than that. I told her
I was going to push from now. But little did I know that, in a 100-miler,
you could go from heaven to hell in as little as 10 minutes.

再当一次考古派,贴一下去年25小时左右的人在这个区段的时间。
感觉他们和欢喜到Winfield的时间差不多,而serendip则晚了至少
一个半小时。
