It is reasonable to assume that after dozens of half/full marathons.
Typically, nothing extraordinary is expected. After all, timing wise, it'll
be in line with measurable estimate. How fast? That depends on how much
work is put in.
I'm particularly fond of the Brooklyn half each year. It consists of one
loop around Prospect Park. Prior years used to be loops. And then a long
straight-as-an-arrow sprint down to Coney Island.
Prospect Park is the blue-collar, gentrified version of Central Park. That
is until the hippies flooded the area in recent years. God bless those
hippies, I'll take them anytime over the drug lords. Can't blame them,
Manhattan has become unaffordable unless you are among the fortunate ones,
the old money or new found IPO paper gazillionaires.
Existing the park approaching Coney Island, the festivity of over-priced
hotdogs and the precariously rickety wooden roller coaster awaits. All too
cool, all too NYC only Woody Allen is capable of capturing the spirit of.
Time SQ and the Central PK can be had by the tourists.
Long ago, I had a mentor. He is not my real mentor, just someone who is
smarter, more educated and dear I say, infinitely more athletic. There was
a time he came around daily, we BS a whole lot and he dazzled me with his
universally admired skills and work ethic. We accomplished much together.
Quite possibly, he is the finest professional I came across. He emanates
integrity in a time when no one cares less.
Casually, he mentioned his training, racing & the club activities, it was
all too cryptic to me back then. A note to runners, these terms to non-
runners makes absolutely no sense.
So, I was not a runner then. In fact just the opposite, I was the out-of-
shape and a dedicated smoker. The polar opposite of this brainiac know-it-
all. Years later, after I caught the running bug, I found out his PR in
Half marathon was 1:21. Can't touch that and likely not in this lifetime.
The Brooklyn half was in that mindset. I need to break 1:30. It will be my
personal mile stone. I precariously came close at 1:30:xx/1:3x a few times
. The greatest fear is if I don't improve in time, it may signal the
beginning of the dreaded decline. It is what Haruki Murakami talked about,
to paraphrase if it's not an exact quote: "I'm in just as good a physical
shape as before, but can't run quite as fast." That happened when he was
in his fifties.
I have vivid recollection of my loops around Prospect Park the previous race
. Running all out, my breathing was rapid, my heart was about to pop out
of my chest. I need to cruise under 7min pace. That was my goal. Do that
for 13.1 we are in biz.
The first two miles was awful, all those speedy ones zoomed by like gazelles
. I'm probably the one about to get snatched by the lion hidden on plain
sight. Two guys around me were strategizing casually, they agreed to a
blizeful 5:30/min pace. NYRR races are full of semi-pros. The top 10
finishers all ran sub-1:10. That's insanely fast for a casual race on a
Saturday morning.
Once settled down to a cruising speed, I was able to maintain a comfortable
pace. Never letup on the under 7min goal.
