My comment: Until early this month, I thought the year-end local elections
in Taiwan would be President Ma Ying-jeou’s waterloo. Unexpectedly (to me
and many an expert in Taiwan and abroad) the Aug. 8, 2009 typhoon exposed a
fault line that looks like breaking Ma’s presidency for good. This is my
