University of California Regents Wednesday confirmed the appointment of new
UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep Khosla and approved a base salary of $411,
000 annually.
His pay represents a 4.8 percent increase over the salary of the current
chancellor, Marye Anne Fox, and is already drawing fire from critics who say
UC executive salaries are inflated in an era of tight budgets and tuition
hikes.
Officials said that the difference will be covered by nonstate revenue
sources, mostly foundations.
The decision came just moments after regents heard a dreary budget report.
Hours earlier a number of students protesting looming tuition hikes and
program cuts temporarily disrupted the board meeting.
Khosla is scheduled to be on the UC San Diego campus Thursday for a news
conference and will be welcomed by Fox, who will step down at the end of
July. She plans to take a one-year leave of absence before returning to
campus to do research and teach.
Khosla is dean of the prestigious college of engineering at Carnegie Mellon,
a private university in Pittsburgh, Penn.
“He is an extraordinary candidate — a proven administrator with great
vision and leadership,” said Regent Charlene Zettel of Encinitas, who was
part of the search committee. “This is a man who had a global vision at
Carnegie Mellon who brought international recognition to that school. He
will bring even greater acclaim to UC San Diego, nationally and
internationally.”
Khosla’s package also includes:
• $102,771 relocation allowance to be paid over four years.
• Annual car allowance of $8,916.
• Free use of a residence near campus while the traditional chancellor
’s residence, the University House, is being renovated. No dollar amount
was attached, but the bill be covered by nonstate funds.
• Undisclosed pension and health benefits, among other perks.
Zettel said regents recognize the possible backlash from offering Khosla
more than the amount being paid to Fox in an era of tight budgets and
escalating tuition. Fox has a base salary of $392,200.
But she defended the decision, pointing out that the increase and some of
the other benefits will not be covered by taxpayer money. |
