Can joking about killing be funny? How would you react when a proposed
solution disguised as comedy is to kill everyone in your home country? The
Chinese-American community is outraged and gravely concerned over the “Kids
Table” segment that aired on the Jimmy Kimmel Show on October 16, 2013.
In the segment, Mr. Kimmel asked four children how the US should pay back
the debt owed to China. One of the children suggested that the United
States “kill everyone in China.” The audience laughed and Mr. Kimmel
acknowledged the comment with “That’s an interesting idea.” He repeated
the suggestion one more time, eliciting more laughter.
While we understand the nature of a comedy show, we found these comments to
be both inappropriate and offensive. The implications go beyond the Asian-
American community by promoting a culture of intolerance and perpetuating
xenophobic rhetoric. A joke about killing people should never be a laughing
matter, and it is sending our children the wrong message that killing might
be a plausible solution.
The Asian-American community is organizing a 10,000 person rally all over
the United States to call for civility, respect and non-violence teaching to
children in American media. We urge the entertainment industries to accept
responsibility for not harming our children by communicating the wrong
culture and world view. We call on ABC Entertainment Group to issue a
formal apology letter on its own website and have a detailed action plan to
ensure that similar insensitive and harmful children jokes will not be aired
in the future.

protest, and we cordially invite your organization to join us in the
demonstration.
