Broadcom Ltd. will cut nearly 700 jobs at its Irvine campus by the end of
March, according to state documents.
The San Jose-based company plans to lay off about 850 workers statewide
including 180 positions in San Jose, Santa Clara and Sunnyvale, according to
filings with the Employment Development Department.
The chip maker made history last May in a record-breaking tech deal when it
was acquired for $37 billion by Singapore-based Avago Technologies. The deal
was official nine days ago.
When the acquisition was announced last spring, both companies said they
anticipated saving $750 million annually within 18 months of the deal
closing through “synergies.”
A company representative declined to comment on the layoffs.
In May 2014, Avago acquired LSI Corp. for around $6.6 billion. In SEC
documents filed shortly after, the company stated plans to let go a
significant number of employees. Two days after Avago acquired Emulex in May
2015, it notified the EDD it planned to lay off 39 employees in Costa Mesa
and 38 in San Jose.
Last March, Broadcom announced it would open a 73-acre campus near Irvine’s
Great Park, 10 miles from its location near University Research Park, at a
cost of $778 million. The new location was expected to accommodate up to 8,
000 employees.
As of last May, Broadcom employed roughly 2,500 people in Irvine and more
than 10,000 people globally.
