I really need some advice for a major career decision.
I'm 36, really feel that I need to make a breakthrough in my career.
I currently work at a start-up, doing product management. My title is
director, but I don't manage anyone. In my previous job, I managed a team of
6 people.
My current job is dead end in many ways.
I just got a job offer with P&L responsibilities to manage a product line
with annual revenue of $50M+. I'll manage 3 people. It all sounds good.
However, the base salary com |

p*******3 发帖数: 88 | 9 This company is working hard to increase profit (they're public and under a
lot of pressure from wall street.)
So, they pay low in cash, but a little bit high on stock options. However, I
have no idea how high the stock could go. It could end up nothing -- I was
given stock options not RSUs.
Also, they need to pay a 3rd-party head hunter (who referred me) for 20%
referral fees.

p*******3 发帖数: 88 | 10 I'm not making a major career change -- I know the domain very well -- it's
basically moving from PM to product line manager. But, I never had P&L
experience. Clearly, they know it's attractive to me, and they're being very
shrewd in low-balling me a little bit.

It's a niche product line, but has been growing well for the past couple of
years. It used to be a step child in the company, but it is now account for
$15-20% of the company's total revenue. So, more attention is given to the
product line, and that's why they're hiring someone. The previous manager
got promoted because he did a good job in past 2 years.

15% performance bonus

c*****v 发帖数: 839 | 26 The bottom line is that you are paid well in a start up and this offer seems
not so attractive in pay scale. The hiring companies gets the uphand as
there are no shortage of candidates in this market.
I would negotiate a little bit more but don't expect too much. If this is
the right opportunity for you, compensation will eventually catch up.
