To put it into historical perspective, many people now believe that gold is
the only worthy investment in the world. But if you compare gold price 1980-
2000, gold actually lost value, even in nominal terms. In the same time
window, stock market has 10x return.
In the last 10 years, apparently, gold has an amazing run (5x), while stock
market has almost zero return, and housing market also has minimal return (
if any at all). But that doesn't imply the future performance is going to
suck (just think about gold in 2000). If anything, it means that the housing
price and stock price is much closer to their intrinsic value than 10 years
ago. Which is actually quite bullish.

真正有钱人买的价位,4m的房子变成3m,是普遍现象。就算是真有钱人,1m也不是小事
了。
BBS上的人觉得房子没怎么跌,是因为大多数都在看1m左右的好区房子。这个价位和地
段的房子的确没怎么跌。下一步是会因为利率上涨贷款更严造成这些房子步multi-
million dollar房子的后尘,还是因为工资暴涨IPO发财外加好区房子供应有限把1m以
上的房子也撑上去,就说不清了。
左右都要赌,赌错了就是几十万的loss,或是miss掉几十万的gain而且永远被price
out。

I understand where you are coming from, but don't under-estimate the number
of people in the valley who are doing well enough to support a few select
prime areas.

但是现在工资水平,俩人税后全扔房子上也就这么多了,1.3M以上的房子一般人根本买
不起,你怎么论证也没用,除非给人涨工资。

value of a home != building it up. It is probably a combination of:
1. comfortably housing a family,
2. having a good neighborhood,
3. kids going to good schools,
4. easy to commute,
5. a vehicle to hedge inflation risk.
Only the first item is related to building cost.
