SEATTLE—The world's first vaccine against malaria has proven partially
effective at protecting children from the disease in the first large study
and could be ready for use by 2015, billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates
said Tuesday, calling the results a "huge milestone."
Three doses of the vaccine, known as RTS,S, cut roughly in half the risk of
developing malaria in children between the ages of 5 months and 17 months,
when compared to a placebo, according to interim results of a clinical trial
published Tuesday in the New England Journal of Medicine. The results were
highlighted by Mr. Gates at a gathering in Seattle of malaria scientists and
policy makers. |
