If it's for a beginner, it actually doesn't matter unless you're a very
serious learner.
No matter which one you pick, you should always try out the instrument
before purchase it!! every piano is different, you can't tell whether it's a
good one or not before trying it. As a pianist myself, I do NOT recommend
group purchase.

It's great to find someone who plays and knows pianos. I like kawai's warm

it should be comparable to a k5. How much difference will the height make
comparing with a 48 or 52 inch piano in a home setting?

| c*****v 发帖数: 1440 | 15 Yamaha and Kawai has quite different personality.
Yamaha in general sounds brighter than Kawai. It is very good for popular
music and band as it needs to stand out among those loud gittars and drums. However, people play classical music always complain about "metal" noise.
Kawai is warmer and gentle in tune (no metal noise) so it is good for classical music in general.
You dont see many classic music concert using Yamaha. Steinway is always the
first choice for this type of concert (as money is not the problem for a
concert hall, or Steinway provide for free as sponsor). You will see
sometimes Kawai is used. You will see very few use Yamaha for classical.
Yamaha is quite durable with less maintaince so it has better resale value
for broader market. That's why you see a lot of people buys it.It is just
like dfbb and Cadillac.
If you are serious about playing music and money is not the problem, get
Steinway instead. Otherwise, both are fine. | c*****v 发帖数: 1440 | 16 Just follows the last post:

Yamaha's concert grand is not bad, many international piano competitions do
use Yamaha, (they usually let the candidates choose which one they wanna use
) if you do notice the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, you
'll see they have 4 choices for the candidates: Steinway & Sons, Yamaha,
Kawai & Fazioli. And as I remember, the 1st prize winner of 2010 the Russian
pianist Yulianna did use Yamaha throughout the whole competition even in
the prize winner's concert.
Plus, Steinway has two lines, one made in the States, one from Germany. The
line from Germany is a lot better than the line in the States.

Old U1 made in japan are very good quality. Recently Yamaha try to reduce
cost and offset the rising price of wood, it uses more and more engineering
wood and plastics. More pianos were made in chinese assembly lines.
Therefore, yamaha can produce enouogh new U1 at even lower price. I bought a
U1 at similar price as today 10 year ago. It will affect the used piano
market. | c*****v 发帖数: 1440 | 19 Thanks for correction.

| p*******r 发帖数: 658 | 20 45inch might be slightly too small. For beginners, probably it's still okay,
but once you reach certain level, let's say up to level 5~6 (CM system) or
level 4~5(ABRSM system, you may want a taller one which the sound board is
bigger and project the sound better.
Set your piano in a room(not living room) with carpet, the acoustic is
better (for practice purpose).

We will have to set the piano in living room with carpet, our bedrooms have

model with matching color and style to our living room -- where we planed to put the
piano. We also learned this model has better hammer than k2/k3. But my
concern is the 45in size. Any comment?

| c*****v 发帖数: 1440 | 23 Well, as far as i know, there are two types of parents and two outcomes from
young players. I am not talking about very talented young player who will
become pro.
Some parents has high expectations and wish their kids be good in
competitions. Some people just dont care and just want to follow everybody
else.
Some kids (very few) really enjoy playing and has the motivation.
Some just do what parents want them to do (most are even worse)
You will soon be struggle and find out which type of parents you are and
which type of kids you have.
if both are second type, it is a good choice to pick a piano that matches
the room. Most likely it will end up as a piece of furniture anyway.
However, if both are first type, picking a good piece of tool is important
than a piece of furniture.
For other type of combination, good luck, time will tell.
Well, >90% the piano will end up as a piece of furniture. Yamaha U1 is a
very good piece. The black color basically matches every type of room you put it in, not other color.

I think i'm a high expectation mom with a motivated child, but I haven't
imagining my child going through competitions. And honestly, i have no clue
how long her motivation will last, she's only 4 now. Actually, I'm not
imagining she take piano as profession. Si 15 is nice not because it is a
good furniture, I did appreciate the sound difference when compare with a k3
, well, with my not trained ears. And it fits my budget better comparing
with a k5. Well, we could stretch for a k5 if needed. There are very good upright pianos in 30k price range, but I can
not afford that now.
Do you mean si 15 is not a good instrument, but more serves as a furniture?

| c*****v 发帖数: 1440 | 26 s series is designed as a piece of furniture first, music instrument second.
If you want to go with the music instrument first, pick K series, or yamaha
U series. it will end up being a much better piece of furniture than s series, trust me. Why? because it gives a strong impression that can produce great music from a good player.
If you have the budget of 10K (not even 30K) go with any grand, new or used,
as long as you have a room for it. | c*****v 发帖数: 1440 | 27 As far as I know, Yamaha U series requires much less maintaince and quality
is more consistant.
That is why a lot of people buy U1.
You will end up with no trouble with group purchase without asking people/
friends help picking one. All just sounds very much the same. Picking a piano with "good sound" is very subjective.
I dont know anything about the consistancy of kawai. | p*******r 发帖数: 658 | 28 The ABRSM Grade4~5/CM Grade5~6 is about intermediate level. In general, it
takes about 4~5 yrs to reach those levels, however, every kid is different,
some might take longer, some might less, it depends. (for your reference,
Beenthoven's "Fur Elise" is about intermediate level)
If you plan to trade in in future, Yamaha has better trade in value. Kawai
is not as stable as Yamaha in long term(let's say after 10 or even 20 yrs).
If you have limited budget, you can consider used Yamaha, some of them are
in very solid condition. If possible, ask your piano teacher to pick one for

As for trade up, many piano stores offer to trade up with the original
