no way to avoid it.

about what info is being retained.
If you are supersensitive about your privacy, you can check some email
encryption option. Note legal intercept is also mandatory in all such
service providers.

clear on what is bothering him. that his emails are scanned at all? or
that it is scanned by the government. or that it is scanned with the intend
to interfere with his privacy. (scanning for viruses would obviously be
something that most people would be ok with since there is no breach of
privacy when done correctly)
i think email encryption programs normally require both sender and receiver
to use the same program. right?
and even then, you cannot encrypt the headers, which are equivalent of your
phone records.
