grade education. His parents were the first to graduate from high school.
"Growing up, the importance of a higher education was ingrained in me," the
Bassett High graduated recalled.
Later, he attended both Rio Hondo and Mt. SAC colleges before received his
bachelor's degree from Cal State Fullerton. Hernandez received a scholarship
to study optometry at Indiana University.
"We are now competing globally, so students have to compete at a higher
level," Hernandez noted. "Education is the greatest equalizer."
He said rigorous programs such as IB will help local students become
successful in this world market. Then he issues a series of challenges to
the IB students.
"I expect you to graduate from high school ... I expect you to graduate from
college ... I challenge you to come back to help our community," Hernandez
said.
