On Thursday, July 10, 2014 Fox News host Bob Beckel set off another
firestorm by using a racial slur and accusing Chinese people of spying and
terrorist activities. His remarks were made on "The Five," a television
program sponsored by your company.
At the beginning the rant, he compared Chinese in this country to Islamic
terrorists. He went on to say: "The Chinese are the single biggest threat to
the national security of the U.S. They have been, they will be and they can
wait, they're very patient. Do you know what we just did? As usual, we
bring them over here and we teach a bunch of Chinamen -- er, Chinese people
-- how to do computers and then they go back to China and hack into us." (To

At the very last of his rant, he proceeded to give all Chinese an insulting
gesture, equivalent to the “F” word. Beckel claimed all Chinese, loyal
American citizens or not, are spies and terrorists. He stated that after we
learned computer skills in America we then go back to China to hack into
American businesses and government.
On the following Monday, July 14, 2014, Beckel somewhat apologized to the
people who were offended. No apology was ever issued to Chinese and Chinese

Mr. Ted Lieu, a Chinese-American State Senator (D) of California and a
Congressional candidate called Beckel remarks "racist" and "xenophobic." Ted
observed: “I am one of those ‘Chinamen’ with ‘Oriental’ eyes that
immigrated to America and majored in computer science. I also served on
active duty in the United States Air Force and continue to serve my country
in the Reserves......We should all be alarmed by the racist, xenophobic
comments by Bob Beckel. His comments have no place in America. He must
resign immediately." Senator Bob Huff, Republican Leader in the California
State Senate, also released a statement condemning Mr. Beckel’s rant.
We, Silicon Valley Chinese/Chinese Americans, together with our friends
worldwide, stand with Mr. Ted Lieu, California Congressman Mike Honda and Mr
. Bob Huff in asking Fox News to fire Bob Beckel immediately. Furthermore,
we want to point out lumping Chinese-Americans and the Chinese government
together is a slanderous act. The association was precisely the reason
behind the Japanese-American imprisonment during World World II, a sad
chapter of history in this great country.
As a responsible company doing business in the international arena and as a
sponsor of the "The Five" program, we are holding your organization
responsible in ensuring Chinese and other ethnic groups are not wrongfully
targeted for treachery and racially charged stereotypical remarks such as
those repeatedly made by Beckel.
Please exercise your duties and rights to ensure that justice and equal
protection for all are not compromised by any broadcast program that your
company is sponsoring.
