下面是email原文,我估计不少朋友今天收到这封信。
Over the past few months, events in cities like Ferguson and Baltimore have
grabbed the nation's attention, and emphasized the importance of strong,
collaborative relationships between police and the communities they serve.
This has been reinforced by the recommendations from the President's Task
Force on 21st Century Policing.
Because you signed this petition, I wanted to update you on some really
important work we're doing to help improve those relationships using open
data.
The potential of this work is huge when it comes to preventing the sorts of
events we've seen play out across the country these past few months — it
could mean we're able to identify problems early, increase internal
accountability, and decrease inappropriate uses of force.
I want to talk to you about it on a call tomorrow at 4 p.m. Eastern. RSVP to
join here, and make sure you ask a question or send us your thoughts ahead
of it.
We'll be joined by a couple other folks from our side, including:
Roy Austin, Deputy Assistant to the President for Urban Affairs, Justice,
and Opportunity
Brittany Packnett, Member of the President's Task Force on 21st Century
Policing
David Wilkinson, Director of the White House Office of Social Innovation and
Civic Participation
We're calling this work the "Police Data Initiative."
President Obama visited Camden, NJ to announce it on Monday, and to
highlight some of the actions the Camden County Police Department is taking
to improve community-police relations.
This initiative will bring local police forces together with top
technologists, researchers, data scientists, and design experts.
As the U.S. Chief Data Scientist here at the White House, part of my job is
to responsibly source, process, and leverage data in order to increase
transparency, provide security, and foster innovation for the benefit of the
American public. So this new initiative is very important and exciting to
me.
Here's another new step you should know about from this week, in case you
missed it: The President announced that we're prohibiting and limiting the
kinds of military equipment that local police forces can acquire from the
federal government -- such as tracked armored vehicles, or grenade launchers.
These are just a couple of our efforts to improve community policing -- and
ahead of tomorrow's call, you can read up on the actions we're taking here.
This is a critical conversation, and we want to hear more from you. That's
why I hope you'll join us tomorrow at 4 p.m. Eastern.
Really looking forward to it.
