Baseball is a truly American, truly immortal sport, and it's no surprise
that songwriters have written countless odes to the pastime. Here's a look
at ten of the best baseball tunes ever penned.
1. " Centerfield" - John Fogerty - With its "Put me in coach, I'm ready to
play" chorus, this 1985 tune is probably the best known radio hit about the
ballfield.
2. "Go Cubs Go" - Steve Goodman - Goodman is a Cubs legend for writing this
rollicking singalong in 1984, which still gets played at every Chicago Cubs
home victory.
3. " America's Favorite Pastime" - Todd Snider - The dark-country troubadour
wrote this 1999 song about Doc Ellis, who famously pitched a no-hitter
while on LSD.
4. "Talkin' Baseball" - Terry Cashman - Cashman gave us all a history lesson
in 1981's "Talkin' Baseball," which was later parodied on the Simpsons.
5. " Night Game" - Paul Simon - The soft, jazzy chords of this 1975 tune lay
behind a quiet, disturbing story of a pitcher dying on the mound.
6. " Joltin' Joe DiMaggio" - Les Brown - DiMaggio inspired a lot of songs,
but this orchestrated hit caught attention in 1941 for its snappy lyrics.
Today, it's a great way to understand the excitement that the country felt.
7. " The Greatest" - Kenny Rogers - This sweet, sentimental 1999 tune from
Kenny Rogers didn't focus on the glory of professional baseball. It's about
a kid pitching to himself, declaring himself the greatest baseball player
alive, and eventually striking himself out. We've all been there.
8. " A Dying Cubs Fan's Last Request" - Steve Goodman - Goodman makes the
list twice for this decidedly less optimistic alternative to his own "Go
Cubs, Go" from 1983. He refers to his hometown boys in blue as "the doormat
of the National League" and gives a hilarious yet touching look at the
lovable losers.
9. "Catfish" - Bob Dylan - Even Dylan watches baseball, and in this tune
from 1975, he tells the story of pitcher Jim "Catfish" Hunter.
10. "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" - Jack Norworth and Albert Von Tilzer -
Yeah, no list is complete without the grandaddy of them all. It's recited in
every ball park, pro and amateur, and will probably last as long as the
game itself.
