WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - The Supreme Court on Thursday unanimously
rejected Microsoft Corp.'s attempt to avoid paying $290 million to a small
Toronto firm that accused the software giant of violating its patents. In an
8-0 vote, the justices let stand a lower court ruling that found Microsoft
violated the patents of i4i Inc. in certain versions of its popular Word
software program. Microsoft, which was sued by i4i in 2007, has since
altered its Word program to get around the problem. The company argued
unsuccessfully that the lower court used the wrong legal standard to
