where thieves break into a car while the owners are at a movie, steal the
car's registration, then zoom to the likely-unoccupied home to steal items
there.
The most recent victim was a family who locked up the car and went inside
the Bella Bottega Cineplex in Redmond. When they returned, the car window
was smashed out, and the car's registration was missing.
"Redmond police showed up within four minutes, their first question to us
was, have you checked for your registration?" said Gary Van Wieringen.
By then, the burglars had probably been in and out of Wieringen house -- a
15-minute drive away, making off with a lot of valuable jewelry.
Once he and his wife got home, they discovered the front door bashed in.
"Devastated," Gary Van Wieringen said. "What's going on? What did they take?
People are in your house. What's missing?"
The criminals knew how to find the house, because a vehicle registration has
the owner's address printed on it.
King County Sheriff's investigators say it's easy.
"I know you're just walking into a movie, and unless you hate it and walk
out five minutes later, then you're going to be gone for at least two hours,
" said Sgt. Cindi West with the King County Sheriff's Office. "So I break
into your car, take your registration, go right to your house, and assuming
nobody's home, I got two hours to work in to get everything I want out."
The Van Wieringen are the latest victims. Detectives are looking into at
least three other burglaries on the Eastside tied to stolen registrations,
including the Kerwin family in Woodvinlle less than two weeks ago.
None of the victims should blame themselves.
"Like the sign says, 'don't leave your valuables in the car,' " Van
Wieringen said. "But it doesn't say 'don't leave your registration in the
car.' "
But sheriff's deputies say it's time to start thinking about it. They
suggest if you want to keep the registration in your car, lock the glove box
or hide it somewhere. Perhaps the best deterrent: take it with you into the
theater or the restaurant.
