Do you know the story of the ducks at the Peak Express on Whistler?
If you’ve been through the Peak Express chairlift in the past few years, yo
u were being watched, by many sets of very small eyes. Those little eyes bel
ong to the ever expanding number of rubber ducks who have taken up residence
in the Peak Express lift huts.
Summer on Whistler usually comes with quite a bit of snow melt, and the Peak
is no exception. A large pool of water generally forms every year on the up
hill side of the bottom station at the Peak Express. In the late spring of
2007, the pool was chosen by a pair of ducks as the perfect spot to raise th
eir ducklings. If you were here that summer, you may remember that the baby
ducks were almost as big a hit with the kids as the chairlift ride and throw
ing snowballs in July. 2007 was the summer of the ducklings, with many excel
lent photo ops, and times spent tossing bits of bread hidden away in pockets
from lunch at the Roundhouse.
From little balls of fluff that could barely walk, they grew and grew, learn
ing to swim and testing their wings in their own little pond, to the delight
of all who saw them. Then came days when the weather grew cooler, and sudd
enly, the ducks weren’t so little anymore. A few of them had learned to use
their wings, and made it past the ridge of earth that sheltered their littl
e pond. Test flights were made, and one cool crisp day in August, the ducks
took to the sky to find their new home.
A much-loved fixture throughout the summer, their absence was noticed immedi
ately. “Where are the ducks?!” people cried – “I never got to say goodby
e”. People were very attached to those little ducks. But then another day
came when some new ducks arrived at the Peak Express. They came in a backpac
k with a couple who are assumed to be local –but we never got their name L.
They said that they missed the ducks, the pond looked lonely and empty, an
d that they wanted to bring in some new residents. Two big ducks and 4 or 5
little baby ducks were presented to the Lifties, with the request that they
be placed in the pond and taken care of as the permanent resident Peak Expr
ess Ducks.
And that is the story of the Peak Express Ducks on Whistler Mountain.
Whistler Blackcomb would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciation
for anyone who has brought a duck to Peak over the years. They have helped
to keep this wonderful tradition going, and that little pond has become a (r
ubber) ducks paradise. Thank you from Whistler Blackcomb.
