raising taxes or fees more than 180 times.
The Columbian newspaper reports 188 bills to raise taxes or fees were
proposed. Those bills would have raised more than $6 billion for the state
if they had passed. Just 35 revenue bills did pass and the Office of
Financial Management estimates they will raise at least $3 billion over the
next decade.
Those numbers come from an analysis by the Washington Policy Center, a
Seattle-based conservative think tank.
The group says that despite what lawmakers say about not being interested in
raising taxes, about 7 percent of the nearly 2,500 measures introduced in
2013 would have raised taxes or fees. Those proposals came from Democrats
and Republicans alike. |
