明显感觉周围用macbook的人越来越多了……
Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL ) just announced a next-generation set of MacBook
designs as well as its new Mac Pro, oriented for professional users. By all
counts, these designs represent the best in their class. The Retina MacBook
Pro has gotten rave reviews, and the Mac Pro looks to pack some serious
hardware in a great form factor.
Of course, it's no secret that Intel (NASDAQ: INTC ) , the world's largest
semiconductor vendor by revenue, supplies the microprocessors for all of
Apple's Mac products. While some may believe that Apple may be gunning to
replace Intel in its Macs, following the recent launches and some of the
statements that Apple's management made at its event, this seems highly
unlikely.
Apple is keeping the Mac separate from (but related to) the iPad
It was obvious at Apple's event that it was looking to bring more
functionality from the Mac to the iPad. This is a subtle difference from
outright converging its notebook/desktop platforms and its tablet platforms
as Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT ) is gunning for with Windows 8.1. On one hand,
it is very obvious that Apple is positioning its 9.7-inch iPad lineup as the
mainstream (i.e. low price) computing device of choice to go up against low
-cost notebooks. At the same time, Apple still sells a lot of Mac products
at the higher end for those who need productivity devices/high-end laptops.
This signals that Apple is unlikely to switch to an iOS-based Mac, and given
that Intel's processors in the low-power PC space are excellent, it is
unlikely that Apple would want to make the switch from Intel's chips to an
in-house chip that would potentially offer inferior performance per watt at
the higher performance levels demanded by a notebook. This has been one of
the major fears surrounding Intel with respect to Apple, but the odds of
those fears coming true anytime in the near future seem next to nil.
Apple buys a very rich mix of products
Unlike most PC vendors that typically buy everything from the low-end
Celerons and Pentiums to Core i3/i5/i7 parts, Apple doesn't buy low-end
chips. Indeed, MacBook models typically come packed with at least Core i5
processors with plenty of room for upsell to Core i7 products. In fact, in
the highest-end 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro, Apple is using a variant of
Haswell that sports a feature known as Crystalwell. This is essentially a
quad-core Haswell processor with a very high-end GPU configuration and on-
package, high-performance memory, and it commands a significant ASP premium
to non-Crystalwell chips.
While Apple is not a 10% customer for Intel, Apple's importance as a
customer cannot be overstated. It is likely that MacOS will continue to gain
share against Windows in the PC space, particularly in light of the recent
software announcements from Apple as well as consumer dissatisfaction with
Windows 8 and potentially 8.1. Having the Mac contract and keeping Apple
happy should be a top priority for Intel's management, and the release of
the Crystalwell chip (which many say was designed specifically for Apple)
shows that Intel recognizes this, too.
Foolish bottom line
While the jury is still out on what Windows 8.1 PC sales will look like, it'
s clear that the best chance for outperformance in the PC space comes from
Apple, with its refreshed Mac products. While the iPad certainly serves as a
headwind to lower-end PCs powered by Intel, the new MacBook and Mac Pro
systems are likely to sell very well. This means a richer mix and a
confirmation that the Apple/Intel relationship is still alive and well.

Overall U.S. PC shipments grew by 3.5% in the third quarter, according to
tech consultancy Gartner. While Hewlett-Packard (HPQ, Fortune 500), Dell (
DELL, Fortune 500), Lenovo and Toshiba all grew their shipments over last
year, Apple's fell by 2.3%. It might be even worse than that. If you ask
Gartner's rival consultancy IDC, Macintosh shipments fell by more than 11%.

Devices and Consumer revenue increased $301 million or 4%, reflecting
continued adoption of the Windows platform, including customer adoption of
new Windows-enabled devices. Devices and Consumer gross margin declined $430
million or 9%, due mainly to our preparation for new product launches.
D&C Licensing
D&C Licensing revenue decreased $335 million or 7%, due mainly to lower
revenue from licenses of Windows OEM and Consumer Office, offset in part by
increased Windows Phone revenue. Windows OEM revenue declined $237 million
or 7%, reflecting a 22% decrease in OEM non-Pro revenue, offset in part by a
6% increase in OEM Pro revenue. Consumer Office revenue declined $217
million or 23%. These decreases resulted primarily from the impact on
revenue of a decline in consumer demand. In the case of Consumer Office, the
decline was also influenced by the transition of customers to O365 Home
Premium, offset by increased levels of Office attached to devices shipped.
Windows Phone revenue increased $102 million, including an increase in
patent licensing revenue.
D&C Licensing gross margin decreased $178 million or 4%, due to decreased
revenue, offset in part by a $157 million or 27% decrease in cost of revenue
. D&C Licensing cost of revenue decreased, due mainly to lower traffic
acquisition costs.
D&C Hardware
D&C Hardware revenue increased $401 million or 37%, due primarily to Surface
revenue of $400 million. The general availability of Surface RT and Surface
Pro started October 26, 2012 and February 9, 2013, respectively.
D&C Hardware gross margin decreased $242 million or 54%, due to a $643
million or 101% increase in cost of revenue, offset in part by higher
revenue. D&C Hardware cost of revenue increased, primarily due to $645
million higher Surface cost of revenue. Surface product costs increased with
higher volumes sold, while other costs grew as we ready inventory lines for
the Surface 2 launch and the holiday sales cycle.

D&C Other revenue increased $235 million or 17%, due mainly to higher
advertising revenue, which increased $106 million or 13%. Search advertising
revenue growth was offset in part by a decline in display advertising
revenue. Search advertising revenue increased 47%, due primarily to
increased revenue per search resulting from ongoing improvements in ad
products and higher search volume, offset in part by lower display
advertising revenue, which was down 31%, due mainly to a decline in Outlook.
com advertising revenue. D&C Other revenue also increased $129 million or 21
%, primarily due to higher volumes of content resold through our online
platforms.
D&C Other gross margin decreased slightly, due to a $245 million or 24%
increase in cost of revenue, substantially offset by higher revenue. D&C
Other cost of revenue increased, due mainly to a $99 million or 20% increase
in advertising cost of revenue, reflecting increased investment in online
infrastructure and higher traffic acquisition costs. D&C Other cost of
revenue also increased, due mainly to royalty costs on higher volumes of
resale transactions.

2014, we deferred $113 million of revenue, primarily related to Windows 8.1

没写清楚。说的是corporate and other去年和今年的差距。这个差距主要是deferral
造成的。

我觉得微软这个名号可以由commerical来继承,client单独成为一个公司,新微软是
client公司的一个重要股东。新微软争取扩大服务器和企业市场,client是一个灵活的
棋子,或者与别的公司厮杀,或者合作,或者烂透的时候扔掉(这种情况下不会把整个
公司拖垮)。从client的角度讲,它没有了一盘棋的负担,对它的发展和壮大也是好事。
