employees receiving layoff notifications and buyout offers as the company
prepares to eliminate 12,000 jobs. Already, some employees have been
notified of site closures the company plans at locations around the world.
The pending closures include Intel's site in DuPont, near Olympia. Timing of
the closures is not clear, and it's not clear if employees working at that
facility will have an option to relocate to Oregon or other Intel sites.
Intel did not immediately respond to an inquiry seeking details and comment.
"Intel has informed us that they will be closing their operations in DuPont.
I do not have a precise timeline yet," Mayor Mike Courts wrote in an email
to The Oregonian/OregonLive. Other sources indicated the site may stay open
for up to a year.
The DuPont site opened in 1996 and was built to accommodate 3,000 workers.
It never approached that total, though, and Intel transferred 350 workers in
2013 – many of them to Hillsboro. Intel's website indicates the DuPont
facility currently focuses on engineering research and product development
for business technologies.
Intel had about 310 people remaining in DuPont after the 2013 transfer. It's
not clear how many remain there now.
Oregon is Intel's largest site, with 19,500 people working in Washington
County. The company has given no indication it plans to close any of its
campuses here, but employees began getting layoff notices Monday morning.
Correction: This article has been corrected to remove reference to a
Bellevue site closing. A source inside Intel says that site will not close.
