NEW BRUNSWICK — Authorities are hailing a nurse at the University
Medical Center of Princeton for her assistance in a Monroe murder case.
First Deputy Assistant Middlesex County Prosecutor Nicholas Sewitch did
not reveal the nurse's identity, but said the Princeton staff member
recognized 39-year-old Xiaoye Wang's abnormal symptoms, researched
poisoning cases and alerting other medical professionals on staff, who
discovered thallium, a highly toxic metal, in the Monroe resident's
system.
Wang's wife, Bristol-Meyers Squibb chemist Tianle Li, 40, is accused of
the crime. She pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges of murder and
hindering her own prosecution during her arraignment in Superior Court.
A petite, stoned-faced Li stood silent beside her attorney Steven Altman
of New Brunswick, who told Judge Michael Toto that he planned to file a
bail motion early next week.
Altman called the current bail of $4 million "exceedingly high" and said
the guidelines for setting bail in a first-degree murder case typically
range from $250,000 to $750,000.
Wang and Li, who were in the midst of a divorce, had been in contact
with local police during a series of domestic disturbance calls at their
Stanley Drive home since April 2009. No injuries were reported during
those calls, Sewitch said.
Wang, a software engineer by trade, checked himself in to the Princeton
hospital on Jan. 14, complaining of viral-like symptoms and by Jan. 23
had slipped into a coma. Tests on Wang came back positive for thallium
on Jan. 25 and he died the next day. Li was charged with hindering her
prosecution on Jan. 26 and was charged with murder Tuesday.
Hazmat teams went to the couple's Monroe home on Jan. 27 and left with
large, covered objects, according to neighbors. Sewitch would not
comment on the findings of the hazmatinvestigation but has said that no
one else living in the home, including an aunt and the couple's 2-year-
old son, appears to have been exposed to the potentially fatal metal.
"To my knowledge they found nothing," Altman said of the findings.
Since his mother's arrest, the toddler has been put into foster care
through the Division of Youth and Family Services.
Authorities believe Li may have administered portions of the metal,
which she obtained through her work at the Lawrenceville Bristol-Meyers
Squibb facility, to her husband between December and January. Sewitch
plans to establish more specific details on the dosage amounts and time
frame once further test results return; however, no other poisons were
involved, he confirmed.
Sewitch said this may be one of three poisoning cases he's encountered
during his 23 years in the prosecutor's office.
