有趣的现象:一般情况下,最终客户的需求是比较稳定的,小有波动,但是在需求
从最终客户到零售商,到分拨中心,最后到供应商的时候,这种波动被逐渐放大了
,这就是著名的Bull Whip Effect。后果是增加每次的订货数量,形成商品积压,
占用大量空间和资金。这个现象的产生主要是因为信息的时滞性。说一个比较可以
理解的例子。开车的时候如果光看前面车辆的速度和是否踩刹车,你会发现你刚想
加速,前面车辆就踩刹车了,你刚想减速,前面车辆又前进了。如果你把眼光放远
点,看到前面几辆车的刹车情况,就可以作出比较超前的判断。大多数车后上方有
个刹车红灯就是这个道理。提高渠道的透明度(visibility),采用Just In Time缩
短生产运输周期都可以减少这种波动。
很多公司都用最优化网络设计(network design)决定运输路线和方式。但是他们往
往只考虑到运输成本,却忽略了其它很多重要方面。比如市场需求,产品特点,分
拨中心的位置和作用,仓库容量。一个好的分拨运输系统是不能这些方面孤立起来
研究的。但是综合起来的模型是非常复杂的,很具有挑战性。通常可以使用一些专
门做network

I would guess her job is data analysis and process optimization rather than
process design. Normally a company will not change its processes very often,
they may want to use data to figure out some interesting information and see
how things can improve. Most Chinese people will work on the data analysis
part but not the process analysis (process mapping, modeling, etc.) part,
though the latter is more valuable. Well, we are supposed to have good
knowledge of IT and mathe, so we always do the

Based on the results, management, marketing teams can modify their strategy.
I guess it could be more fun to work for consulting companies. But industry
experience should be helpful if littlesail wants to become a consultant.

SCM is THE buzzword today. However, it has never been clearly defined,
everyone has their own understandings. It is probably another fancy way of
saying old things. Look at the SCM textbooks, are there any really new
techniques or methods?
I believe the most important thing about SCM is that it encourages companies
to look beyond their own organization. The principles and practices of modern
SCM have long been established but just not fully implemented due to various

because basically COBOL is an outdated language that nowadays few
people can still write it and it's not taught in school anymore
yet some of the companies are still using it because
they built up their system in 70s or 80s i think
and it's so expensive to replace the whole system
so they would rather paying big money to someone to write it.
I know safeco searched nation wide in order to get a COBOL
programmer and finally got a 40-ish guy from FL and paid him 6-digit salary.
