market risk management in a European I-bank. Basic knowlege in financial
products, risk management preferred; hard-core quantitative background might
be over-kill at this point, but you can see the potential within the bank.
We need to deal with spreadsheets, so I expect you are comfortable with
Excel VBA. It's fine that you are fresh graduate without related experience,
but show me your passion for your job.

发帖数: 336 | 9 Educational background wise, MFE is preferred, no matter which school you
are from as far as you can survive the interview process. If you hold FRM or
similar certificate, it's a plus. Though MFE will teach you the popular
models in deriving sensitivities, it won't teach you know to deal with a
real portfolio & analysis of daily movements. If you can come up the idea of
how to capture risk not in VaR or more sofisticated idea of vol term
structure, that's the hottest candiates for any risk departments.
As for comminication skill, at least you can explain clearly how the
sensitivities are calculated & move. This is not a sales job, no need to
push hard to sell anything. (btw, sales in Singapore is really aggresive and
pushing, which makes me very uncomfortable---since I will never buy
anything from a pushing salesperson)

Only 1/5 are women in market risk in my current company, though women are dominant in other middle office departments. Much less in my
previos employers in NYC. Smaller bonus pool makes it less attractive for
fresh quants, but not less demanding. Risk managers, model review/validation
team ask for quite advanced skillsets in portfolio analysis.
The good part of it: in hard times (even in 3rd Q of 2009, market risk was
the only department expanded). This year in Singapore, despite the exciting
GDP figures reported, financial industry is experimenting hard time, you
will see hiring frozen & cost cut from almost all I-banks for the rest of
the year. The role advertised here is actually the last head count of 2011 for my department, unless in urgent hiring.
