Social Disciplining in Comparative Perspective
In the preceding two chapters, I have tried to show two things: 1) that the
Dutch and Prussian states were unusual in certain respects, the former in
terms of its regulatory power, the latter in terms of its administrative
efficiency; and 2) that these peculiarities were at least partly the product
of Calvinist-inspired religious, social and political disciplining.
