If it's a proprietorship, you usually file a DBA name certificate at local
county tax office. You can do the name search right there to find out if
your desired name is still available or not.
If you're forming other type of entities such as C Corp, LLC or LTD, you can
usually do that online at your local secretary of state's website. And the
website will prompt you to do the name search before registering.
