See, that is the key point. I think it is a 2*10+1 control factorial design.
But not quite sure about the answer.

My understanding is treatment level has 2 and 1 control. There are totally
10 genotypes with 4 replicates each. The research's interesting according to
my understanding is how the water stress and genotype affect the plant
height.

and the genotype could be the block.
Not very sure, depends on the researcher's interest.

Well, in the question "Ten genotypes are investigated in this study", so isn
't it a variable? I agree height is response. Question also asks about
whether genotype is fix or random. If it is block, should be random. But in
this way, the rest question "is it important? and Describe scenarios for
both cases" will not work.....

The second question, I am thinking to choose A1B1C1 as the defining contrast
for no reason coz I do not know why as well....In this way, there might be
a lost for the effect....
