Statistics Student Dies in Boston Bombings
One of the three people killed in the Boston Marathon bombings earlier this
week was a first-year graduate student from Shenyang, China, who was
studying statistics. Lu Lingzi, 23, was a mathematics and statistics major
at Boston University. She was attending the race with two friends from the
school-one of whom was severely injured in the second of the two blasts and
is now in stable condition at a local hospital. Boston University President
Robert Brown announced Lu's death in a letter published Tuesday on the
school's website and confirmed that Lu's friend, Danling Zhou, was wounded.
"Our hearts and thoughts go out to the family and friends of both victims,"
wrote Brown. Lu was an excellent student who was awarded an academic
scholarship to the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) following her
graduation from Northeast Yucai School, considered one of the best high
schools in her hometown. While at BIT, she received accolades for her math
skills. She was attending Boston University to pursue her passion for
statistics. "The ASA community extends its deepest sympathy to Ms. Lu's
family, as well as the families of Krystle Campbell and Martin Richard, who
also were killed," said ASA President Marie Davidian, a professor of
statistics at North Carolina State University. "We also pray for the
recovery and healing of the 183 victims injured in this senseless attack." |
