Correction? Did anyone believe that the highest percentage of people calling
for a correction in the Investors Intelligence Poll in 27 years could be
right?
Did anyone think that we could be at a moment where Greece could bring us
down any more than Dubai did? Both market-moving episodes brought more
shorting to the market, a phenomenon we have seen time and again AFTER a big
selloff.

January retail sales numbers. Such sales increased 0.5%, which was higher
than economists' previous expectations of a 0.3% increase. December retail
sales were adjusted upward, but sill at a 0.1% decrease, compared with the
previously reported 0.3% drop.
Initial unemployment claims fell 43,000 to 440,000 in the most recent week,
beating the expected 12,000 decline. Continuing claims dropped to 79,000,
the lowest leve |

Housing starts and import prices both exceeded expectations. Housing starts
rose 2.8% in January. Building permits fell, but were in line with
estimates. Import prices rose 1.4% in January, largely due to higher oil
prices, compared to an upwardly revised 0.2% increase in December. |
