Netflix shares trade higher following Paramount deal, talks with Miramax
Netflix (NFLX) shares are trading up $6.09, or 2.65%, to $236.10 following
the
movie rental company's announcement of a deal with Paramount, a unit of
Viacom
(VIA), and talks with Miramax. The Wall Street Journal reported this weekend
that Netflix and independent film studio Miramax are expected to sign a
five-year deal valued at over $100M to stream the studio's library of over
700
titles. The deal would be part of efforts by Filmyard Holdings, Miramax’s
acquirers, to earn back the $660M they spent buying the company from Disney
(DIS) last year. This morning, Netflix said it reached a multi-year
licensing
deal with Paramount to allow Canadian Netflix members to watch hundreds of
the
division's new movie titles instantly on their computers and TVs. The deal
gives
Netflix exclusive Canadian subscription television rights to all first-run
films.
