DENVER (AP) -- Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc.'s fourth-quarter net income
jumped 24 percent on higher prices and new restaurants. But analysts
expected stronger growth, and Chipotle's shares fell in after-hours trading.
The company's costs for food and other materials have risen sharply, putting
pressure on its profit margins. It expects food costs to keep rising,
growing in the mid-single digits in 2012 from its most recent quarter.
The company has also spent money on expanding.
The Denver-based burrito chain reported after the market closed Wednesday
that it earned $57.5 million, or $1.81 per share, for the quarter that ended
Dec. 31. That's up from $46.4 million, or $1.47 per share, in the same
period in 2010.
Analysts polled by FactSet had forecast higher earnings of $1.83 per share.
In the October-November quarter, Chipotle's revenue also grew 24 percent, to
$596.7 million from $482.5 million. The company got a boost from higher
prices, which went into effect this spring and summer, and more customers
buying its Mexican-inspired food. It opened 67 new stores during the quarter
, bolstering growth, and revenue from stores open at least a year rose 11.1
percent. That's a key revenue measure that excludes stores newly opened or
closed.
Total revenue beat analyst expectations of $591.5 million
Chipotle has been on a long hot streak as consumers clamored for the casual
chain's food and convenience. Shares rose 67 percent in the past 52 weeks,
following annual profit growth of 41 percent in fiscal 2010 and 62 percent
in 2009.
That's set investor expectations high for continued fast growth. But
Chipotle's net income growth slowed to 20 percent in 2011. It earned $214.9
million, or $6.76 per share, versus $179 million, or $5.64 per share, in
2010.
In 2012, Chipotle plans to open 155 to 165 new stores. It currently
operates1,230 stores. It also said it may spend up to $100 million more on
share repurchases.
Chipotle shares rose $3.12 to close the day at $370.41, but fell $8.37, or 2
.3 percent, to $362.95 in after-hours trading. | p********o
