ATHENS (Dow Jones)--Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos has instructed the
country's finance ministry to document the economic consequences of
abandoning the euro, according to a senior Socialist party official Monday.
Speaking in a radio interview, Socialist party spokesman Panos Beglitis said
Papademos had asked for the report in a meeting Sunday with the three
political party bosses backing his coalition government.
"It was asked of the finance ministry and general accounting office to
record with precision and realism, all of the consequences of the country
exiting the euro would have," Beglitis told privately owned radio station 9.
"I believe this is an important initiative because the Greek people must
know exactly--and therefore assume their responsibilities--about the
consequences that bankruptcy would have and an exit from the euro zone," he
added.
Papademos met with the leaders of the Socialist, or Pasok, party; the New
Democracy party and the nationalist Laos party on Sunday in a bid to get
their backing on austerity measures needed to secure a second bailout for
Greece.
This meeting was expected to resume Monday but has been pushed back a day,
giving Papademos more time with creditors to continue negotiations.
Greece has been in twin sets of talks with its European partners and the
International Monetary Fund after they agreed to provide the country in late
October with a second bailout worth EUR130 billion ($170 billion). At the
same time, Athens is also negotiating a EUR100 billion debt write-down plan
with private-sector creditors. |
