With current oil price, they probably already hedged oil price way into 2015
and beyond. With that safety net, they can wait for the NG price to go up.
I agree with you that NG price is pathetic now. Nobody is betti ngon NG
price spike. That is not a reasonable expectation. But it is in the upward
trajectory. I believe the market is powerful enough to self correct. For NG,
the self correction is going on, albeit it might take years to reach
equilibrium.
The stabilized NG price should be around $6 where the industry-wide average
production cost is around $5. The reason CHK has the best asset in NG
industry is that their NG product break even cost is around $3. With that,
CHK NG should make money already in 2013. With every $1 increase in NG, CHK
is making $800M in profit. At equilibrium price of $6 for NG, they will be
making additional $2B in 2015 and beyond.
