Shares of Herbalife (HLF -2.9%) are moving lower, apparently in response to
an article by William Alden and Andrew Ross Sorkin published midday.
According to documents reviewed by the NY Times, an HLF senior vice
president said he had "a very sick feeling in [his] stomach" when production
resumed at a California plant in 2011 after the company had spent five
weeks fixing "a metal contamination problem" first identified when "fine
shards of metal" were detected in HLF's Formula 1 nutrition shake "as it was
coming off the production line."
"Quite honestly, if this place has a good manufacturing practices audit by
the FDA in the next month, they’re in trouble," the VP is also quoted as
saying at the time.
HLF says none of the contaminated product ever reached customers.
Nevertheless, the Times says "the attorney general has subpoenaed a former
employee ... to produce internal documents about the problem." |
