Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (NYSE:BABA) on Target to $50
Alibaba in panic mode after IR spills the beans.
Alibaba has denied its sales volume growth has slowed into single digits
because of China’s faltering economy, the official Xinhua news agency
reported, after comments by an executive raised worries over performance.
The company dismissed media reports that turnover on its hugely popular
online platforms would grow less than 10 percent for the quarter ending in
September, Xinhua said late Wednesday.
An Alibaba spokeswoman on Thursday described the Xinhua report as accurate
but made no further comment.
It came after Alibaba investor relations chief Jane Penner said gross
merchandise volume (GMV) — a measure of value for online sales — for the
current quarter came in lower than the company had forecast, Bloomberg News
reported.
“We are observing some negative impact to the magnitude of the spending,”
Bloomberg quoted Penner as telling the Citi Global Technology Conference in
New York.
“We believe that our September quarter GMV will be mid-single-digits lower
than our initial expectations.”
New York Stock Exchange-listed Alibaba’s stock price tumbled on Tuesday,
but it closed up 5.14 percent to 64.04 on Wednesday.
Alibaba’s GMV in the quarter ended in June jumped 34 percent year-on-year
to 673 billion yuan (then valued at 109 billion), according to the company.
Alibaba executive vice chairman Joe Tsai told Xinhua that the stock price
should reflect the company’s actual performance.
“Comments about the Chinese economy will not affect our confidence in
allowing our performance to speak for the company,” he said.
China’s economy has slowed further this year, expanding 7.0 percent in each
of the first two quarters, after its growth for last year hit a 24-year low
of 7.3 percent.
Alibaba’s Taobao platform holds more than 90 percent of the consumer-to-
consumer market in China, and its Tmall platform is believed to command more
than half the Chinese market for business-to-consumer transactions.
Alibaba Group Holding Limited, incorporated on June 28, 1999, is a holding
company. The Company is principally engaged in online and mobile commerce
through products, services and technology that enable businesses to operate
and extend their reach to sell to consumers and businesses in the People’s
Republic of China (the PRC) and internationally. The Company provides retail
and wholesale marketplaces available through both personal computer and
mobile interfaces in the PRC and internationally. Retail marketplaces and
services operated by the Company include the China online shopping
destination (Taobao Marketplace); the China brands and retail platform (
Tmall); the China group buying site that offers products by aggregating
demand from consumers through limited time discounted sales (Juhuasuan), and
the global consumer marketplace targeting consumers around the world (
AliExpress). Wholesale marketplaces operated by the Company include the
online China wholesale marketplace (1688.com) and the online business-to-
business marketplace that focuses on global trade among businesses from
around the world (Alibaba.com).
The Company offers cloud computing services, including elastic computing,
database services and storage and computing services, for its platforms and
the platforms of companies integral to its ecosystem, such as Alipay, to
sellers on its marketplaces and other third-party customers, such as start-
up companies in mobile applications and Internet gaming to corporations in
entertainment, consumer electronics, financial services, mobile
communications, healthcare and education. The Company also provides Internet
infrastructure services, such as Web hosting and domain name registration.
The Company, through Alipay, offers payment and escrow services for buyers
and sellers, providing security, trust and convenience to its users. The
Company’s affiliate, Alibaba Pictures, produces and distributes films and
television programs. The Company’s other businesses consist primarily of
the mobile Internet services provided by UCWeb and AutoNavi. UCWeb is mobile
browser company. UCWeb also provides various mobile value-added services,
including mobile search, application distribution and a mobile games
platform. AutoNavi provides digital map, navigation and location-based
services in China.
Taobao Marketplace
The Taobao Marketplace is a free platform for buyers to explore and discover
products and sellers to establish a low-cost online presence. Users can
access Taobao Marketplace anytime, anywhere through the Taobao Website, its
Mobile Taobao Application and its mobile-optimized Website. Through
individual online storefronts, sellers list their products and services and
complete transactions with buyers.
Tmall
Tmall is an online platform featuring brands and retailers with each seller
having an identifiable online storefront. Users can access Tmall anytime,
anywhere through the Tmall Website and the mobile applications and mobile-
optimized Websites provided by Taobao Marketplace and Tmall. Brands and
retailers operate their own stores on the Tmall platform with identities,
look and feel, enabling sellers to control their own branding and
merchandising. As of March 31, 2015, there were over 140,000 brands on Tmall.
Juhuasuan Group Buying Marketplace
Juhuasuan is an online group buying marketplace. Juhuasuan is a marketplace
that operates a distinct Website with its own brand identity among consumers
. Juhuasuan offers distinct group buying channels featuring branded and
private label products, products made to custom specifications and offline
commerce.
1688.com
1688.com is an online wholesale marketplace. 1688.com offers membership
packages for sellers to establish an online presence to market relevant
product information to wholesale buyers involved in domestic trade in China.
The Company has extended its business model to create a transaction
platform on 1688.com to help wholesalers transact with buyers and the
majority of buyers are merchants on its retail marketplaces. The majority of
sellers on 1688.com are Chinese wholesalers, suppliers or distributors.
1688.com also acts as a wholesale channel for merchants doing business on
the Company’s retail marketplaces to source products from domestic
wholesalers.
AliExpress
AliExpress is a global consumer marketplace that enables consumers from
around the world to buy directly from wholesalers and manufacturers in China
. On AliExpress, consumers have access to a range of products. In addition
to the English-language site, AliExpress operates 15 local language sites in
countries like Russia, Brazil, Indonesia, Spain and France. Sellers
primarily consist of small and medium-sized businesses located in China.
Alibaba.com
Alibaba.com is an online commerce platform. Alibaba.com is an English
language wholesale platform focused on supporting global trade. Sellers on
Alibaba.com pay for an annual Gold Supplier membership to host a storefront
with product listings on the marketplace. Sellers also purchase an upgraded
membership package to receive value added services, such as upgraded
storefront management tools, P4P marketing services, higher rankings from
keyword search, custom clearance, value added tax (VAT) refund and other
import/export business solutions.
The Company competes with Tencent and Baidu.
