J.C. Penney Co. Inc. (JCP) reported third-quarter 2017 results before
markets opened Friday morning. The venerable retailer reported an adjusted
net loss per share of $0.33 and $2.81 billion in revenues. In the same
period a year ago, it reported a net loss of $0.21 on revenue of $2.86
billion. Third-quarter results also compare to consensus estimates for a net
loss of $0.17 and $2.74 billion in revenue.
Same-store sales rose 1.7% in the quarter. On a GAAP basis J.C. Penney lost
$0.41 per share, worse than the year-ago third-quarter loss of $0.22 per
share.
Cost of goods sold rose by 2.8% year over year, which the company attributed
to the liquidation of slow-moving inventory, higher shrink rates and the
continued growth in online and major appliance businesses.
