MESA, Arizona, March 10. BRAZILIAN sprint sensation Cesar Cielo just inked a
huge deal with the Minas Tenis Club down in Brazil to begin representing
the organization according to a Minas announcement from today.
Cielo, who has been training under head coach Scott Goodrich as part of Sun
Devil Aquatics as well as with the Mesa Aquatic club upon those two teams'
merger, is looking at engaging in some more 100-meter freestyle focused work
according to Goodrich.
"Being in the United States has been a bit tough in terms of sponsorship
obligations for Cesar," Goodrich told Swimming World. "Cesar really wants to
push himself in the 100, and he needs a training group for that versus just
training by himself. We talked about it at the Orlando Grand Prix, and he's
going down there to see if that group fits his style."
While in Belo Horizonte as part of the Minas Tenis Club, Cielo will also be
training with 100-meter freestyle stalwart Nicolas Oliveira with head coach
Scott Volkers. Part of the focus for Cielo making the change is to be in a
position to help Brazil be a contender in the 400-meter freestyle relay at
the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The primary timing point for the Minas deal was to gain Cielo's
representation at Brazilian Nationals in April. Also, with Cielo's VISA
being up in the U.S., he was only able to stay in the States for 90 days at
a time.
Mesa Aquatic Club Co-Director Paul Smith told Swimming World that they are
still in discussions with Cielo about him returning to Mesa in the fall and
that Mesa's relationship with Cielo has been and continues to be fantastic. |
