O****a 发帖数: 135 | 1 I filed my 2013 tax return in Oct 2014 claiming a large refund (all paid on
time).
In November, I received a letter from IRS saying I may owe AMT tax; and if I
don't send in Form 6251 within 20 days, they may assess AMT. I am not
familiar with AMT
and didn't get to complete 6251 within the 20 day deadline. I'm okay with
IRS calculate the AMT and deduct from my refund. 3 months from the November
letter, they
issued a refund to me. I assumed it is after final assessed tax amount and
didn't check against my return. 1 month after the refund, another letter
arrived telling me I owe x $ of AMT, and X $ of penalty and interest.
I called them then and the examiner on the phone told me it doesn't make
sense for
this to be handled this way. But it's another examiner who is in charge of
my case. I didn't get to pick who I speak to when I called in. I sent in my
response letter telling them that I've paid the AMT tax, and asked for
waiver of penalty an interest. They responded and said no
