Feels a bit short of racing, February 1, 2014
I consider myself a fan of the new NSF series (hot pursuit, most wanted etc.
.). My favorite is hot pursuit and tht's why I purchased Rivals which is
supposed to be the successor of the previous cop-racers feast. And best of
all Criterion was involved in the production (the team that made hot pursuit
and most wanted) which got me really excited. So... here are a few things
why I am giving this game 3 starts instead of 5.
1. The cop-racers events are not as exciting as before. It feels more pushed
and rushed, that after every race your heat level rises and you are chased
by cops. And the heat level rises so fast that you have to keep running
before tons of police cars and helicopters get you surrounded. What's worst
of all is that you are carrying your points earned from previous race and if
you get caught you lose them all.. so i find myself constantly going back
to hideout and this really killed the fun.
2. Lack of rigidity. The game is not hardcore on racing. You are not racing
on an equal base with all racers. For example at the start of the race all
other cars rush pass you from behind and you are literally miles behind them
trying to start your car. and in 1 min just using a single Turbo (pursuit
tech) you race your car up to 200m/h and lead by miles. It's just not racing
any more. It does not feel like Hot pursuit and it feels too casual for me.
I really enjoyed the racing events in NSF: Hot Pursuit where you have some
casualty but overall you are racing which should be the most important thing
here.
3. The lack of setting adjustment. There is no setting to control the day
and night or any other elements. The night racing is too dark and I am
personally not a fan of racing in night and it's too dark.. You are forced
to experience the weather changes and day/night shift which alternates so
frequently that sometimes I just want to say , give me a break. I want to
race!
4. The cops are annoying, yes they get in the way when you don't want them
to. The hot pursuit events in rivals (there are five type of events, hot
pursuit being one of them) are not that well designed all you have to do is
to use turbo and race through the end line. Where in previous NSF hot
pursuit game events are more competitive between racers and cops you need to
dodge the tech traps well and racing becomes more fun and exciting. The new
Rivals needs to balance better
5. The graphics. I am a little over the fence here. The environment looks
very believable and the details are outstanding. But the lighting and
overall design could have been better. There should be more shortcuts and
more exciting jump-over the bridge or seeing the sunset by the sea line etc.
. Everything happens so fast and random that I believe I race in dark night
more often than anything else.
6. The career mode feels a bit short and unexciting. People criticized the
mode in previous games where you have to drive to every racing start point
but now the hideout/cop station brings in tons of loading time, cutting
short of driving experience (again if you don't return to hideout you are
facing the risks of losing all your racing points if get caught).
Okay I have said enough bad things about the game. They are not necessarily
bad. Maybe it's because i had high hope for this game as the first new-gen
racing game. Criterion is behind this project but I can see they are only
providing the support and new team Ghost does most of the work. Well a lot
of things look still need improvement i hope the next NSF game is better.
