Ashok Varadhan, a 36-year-old trader who heads Goldman's currencies business
and emerging-markets trading units, personifies the low-key nature of his
product. A college math and economics major, he wears thick, Buddy Holly-
style glasses and often answers his own phone. His neatly organized 47th-
floor office is often vacant by 5:30 p.m., say associates, an advantage in
markets closing earlier in the afternoon.
Mr. Varadhan is one of just two Wall Street representatives on the Treasury'
s Borrowing Advisory Committee, a panel of market participants that counsels
the government on debt issuance. During the bull market, he made more than
$10 million, according to published reports and someone familiar with the
matter, and early last year spent $16 million on an apartment off Manhattan'
s Central Park West in the same building where his boss, Goldman chief Lloyd
Blankfein, owns property, according to published reports.
Using College Skills
In college, Mr. Varadhan was head manager of Duke University's men's
basketball team; he arranged for team meals during road trips and made sure
practice equipment was shuttled from place to place. "He's used those skills
well in what he's doing right now," says Duke basketball coach Mike
Krzyzewski. Mr. Varadhan didn't return a call for comment.
