Question:
My son is 13 years old. He is in seventh grade and has been playing tennis
for six years now. His goal is to make varsity tennis as a freshman. I am a
high school tennis coach and believe he has a chance to do it. He has a good
two-handed backhand but lately has been really consumed with changing to a
one-handed backhand. Is this a good time? He is just starting to play
competitive USTA matches and anticipating that this is going to be a long
and rough learning curve for him. What are your thoughts?
Player Responses:
Kenny S., Chicago
If the player is still growing and at or over 5-foot-8, I would say a one-
handed backhand could work. If not, stick to the two-hander. Teach the
student how to hit a one-handed backhand volley with the other hand on the
throat and not swinging. Also with the two-hander, teach a slice one-hander
or a Jimmy Connors-like two-handed slice. |

Olivier Rochus is the shortest current player whoever reached top 25.
Single handed has better coverage and more nature slice.
His brother Christophe Rochus is 5cm taller, used double-handed but earned
much less money.

Ivo Karlovic, 208cm, is single-hand backhand. I guess "better
coverage" wasn't his concern? :-)

is not agaist "tall player doesn't fit double handed"
Tall plaer -> single or double both work.
Tall/Rich/Handsome always hold advantage :)
