Can two great singles players beat two great doubles players?
Sure.
Can a team of singles stars win a doubles titles?
Sure.
On any given day, anything can happen in tennis, especially on the doubles
court where margins are thin. We have seen it from time to time. Athens
Olympics, a few times at the French, a few times at Indian Wells. But
overall, the doubles stars usually beat the singles stars.
That should not be surprising.
They are two different but similar sports, with different skill sets and
strategies. Punters punt. Field goal kickers kick field goals. Shaq slam
dunked. Steve Kerr shot three pointers. Some ice skaters do the short
program well, some do the long program well. Some excel at pairs. Some at
ice dance.
Tennis has men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s
doubles and mixed doubles. The more we run each up the flag pole and the
more we promote and program and value each discipline, the more width and
breadth our sport has. The more overall appeal. The more that will play it.
The more that will watch it.
Same with football — way back in the day, all the players went both ways on
offense and defense. The game was not played at near as high a level as
today. Do you want to see Joe Montana playing defensive back? Much better to
make him a QB 100% of the time and Ronnie Lott a DB and not a QB, eh.
In the ’60s and ’70s, the way someone played singles was the same way they
played doubles. But now Singles has evolved into a baseline game with no
serving and volleying whatsoever, with long rallies and lotsa grinding and
running. Doubles, however, still features serving and volleying and crisp
and precise returns and lots of teamwork and more complex strategies and
tactics and a baseline grinder with poor volleys is not going to excel in
doubles — can they sometimes win anyway, of course.
I would submit that singles is checkers and doubles is chess. The best
doubles points — it seems to this biased writer — are way better than the
best singles points.
Basketball players today are better than the players in the ’60s and ’70s
and look how well so, so many players can hit the three-point shot — even
guys that are 7 feet tall. Football players are bigger, stronger, faster and
quarterbacking and wide receiving and kicking skills are amazing. Same with
baseball players and track athletes and swimmers.
And, of course, the same with tennis players. Singles has never been played
better. Doubles has never been played better.
Since Mike ‘n Bob have been regulars on the pro tour for the past 13 years,
the #1 players have been Lleyton, Andy, Roger, Rafa, and Novak. Here are
their doubles records and percentages:
*** Fed has played over 200 doubles matches in his career and has won 8
titles. He has a winning percentage in his doubles matches of 59%. Of the 87
doubles tournaments he has entered he has a title winning percentage of 9%.
*** Rafa has played over 150 matches and has won 8 titles. He has a winning
percentage in his doubles matches of 64%. Of the 80 doubles tournaments he
has entered he has a title winning percentage of 10%.
*** Novak Djokovic has played over 75 doubles matches and has won 1 title.
He has a winning percentage in his doubles matches of 42%. Of the 47 doubles
tournaments he has entered he has a title winning percentage of 2%.
*** Lleyton Hewitt has played over 180 doubles matches in his career and has
won 2 titles. He has a winning percentage in his doubles matches of 59%. Of
the 70 doubles tournaments he has entered he has a title winning percentage
of 3%.
*** Andy Roddick played over 115 doubles matches in his career and has won
4 titles. He has a winning percentage in his doubles matches of 57%. Of the
65 tournaments that he has entered he has a title winning percentage of 6%.
*** Mike and Bob have played over 1,100 doubles matches in their career and
have won 94 titles. They have a winning percentage in their doubles
matches of 76%. Of the 342 tournaments they have entered they have a title
winning percentage of 27%.
Mike ‘n Bob’s career record vs. Roger Federer is 5-3.
Mike ‘n Bob’s career record vs. Rafael Nadal is 4-0.
Mike ‘n Bob’s career record vs. Lleyton Hewitt is 8-1.
Mike ‘n Bob’s career record vs. Andy Roddick is 5-2.
Totals vs. #1 singles players is 22-6 or 78%, which is slightly better than
their tour average of 76%.
And one more piece of propaganda: At the 2012 Olympic Doubles in London,
most all the singles stars were entered in the draw. Nine of the Top 10
singles players competed. Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka lost in the second
round to Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram of Israel. The Bryan Bros. beat
Erlich and Ram in the next round, then defeated Julien Benneteau-Richard
Gasquet in the semis, and they turned aside Jo Willie Tsonga-Michael Llodra
in the finals — all in straight sets.
Uno Mas: At the 2014 BNP Paribas at Indian Wells, everyone was buzzing
about the number of singles stars that entered. I counted 33, including the
team of Roger Federer-Stan Wawrinka, Andy Murray, Juan Martin Del Potro, Jo
Willie Tsonga, John Isner, Marin Cilic, Feliciano Lopez, Fernando Verdasco,
Sam Querrey, Milos Raonic, and on and on.
Some speculated that they would dominate the doubles. When the smoke had
cleared who was in the finals? Yeah, the #1 and #2 doubles teams.
And by the way, the #2 ranking doubles team of Bruno Soares-Alex Peya,
bested Federer-Wawrinka, 6-4, 6-1 in 56 minutes, winning 56 total points to
their opponents 39. Then the #1 ranking team, the Bryan Bros. beat Soares-
Peya, 6-4, 6-3.

Thanks for sharing.
While the article has a valid point, however I feel the article down played
some key notes.
The goals many singles star players play doubles are to get more competition
time, get used to the court and weather condition, work on certain aspect
of their game in a match without sacrificing their single's standing.
"Bruno Soares-Alex Peya,bested Federer-Wawrinka, 6-4, 6-1 in 56 minutes", it
is true, but the article fail to mention that Federer was on route to get
to the final in the singles, AKA big single's match ahead of him. Wawrinka
just had a horrible loss. One may rightfully speculate that Federer wanted
to conserve physical strength and mental focus for his singles run and Stan
could want to get to get to Miami practice court quickly and re-evaluate his
game...
At end of the day, singles stars are called "singles star" because their
focus are on singles matches....
