WIMBLEDON, England – Carlos Rodriguez was the calming force and strategic
mastermind behind Li Na's late-career surge.
But Li is on her own again, after reports Thursday that the 50-year-old
Argentine had ended a nearly two-year relationship to spend more time at the
tennis academy he oversees in Beijing.
Li's agent, Max Eisenbud of IMG, said Rodriguez was under contract for
another 18 months and that the academy owners no longer wanted him on the
road.
"Basically we were renting him from the academy," Eisenbud said Thursday at
Wimbledon.

Initially the owners believed it would be good for business to be associated
with one of China's highest-profile athletes. But over time they felt the
arrangement was not paying dividends.
"The academy just felt like he couldn't travel anymore," he said.
Eisenbud said Li, the reigning Australian Open champion and world No. 2, was
aware of the situation but figured they would find a way to work it out.
She didn't take it well.
"It's not an easy situation but there's not really much we could do," said
Eisenbud, whose other clients include Maria Sharapova. "I think it was a
tough couple days for her."
Li hired Rodriguez, who coached Belgium's Justine Henin to seven Grand Slam
titles, in July 2012.

The 2011 French Open champion had been in a tailspin since her win in Paris
and had been coached by her husband, Jiang Shan, after parting ways with
Michael Mortensen.
Rodriguez helped the 32-year-old claim her second Grand Slam title at
January's Australian Open and rise to No. 2, the highest singles ranking in
history for an Asian player.
"He's a really good psychologist," said Eisenbud. "I think that's where he
helped her the most."
Since winning in Melbourne, Li has suffered two early defeats at majors.
Last month, she lost in the first round of the French Open to Kristina
Mladenovic of France. Last week, she bowed out in third round of Wimbledon
to Barbora Zahlavova Styrcova of the Czech Republic.
She is now taking some time off at her home in Wuhan.
Eisenbud said her recent results were unrelated to the split, and said he
didn't think the pending change had been weighing on her mind.
Asked if she was still motivated, Eisenbud said: "Hard to tell."
He said Li would continue to train with Rodriguez when she is in Beijing and
that he and Rodriguez were already exploring ideas for a new coach. Her
husband is not in the mix.
Eisenbud has one name particular that he felt might be a good fit.
"At the appropriate time I'll introduce it to Li Na," he said. | P**********e

我觉得李娜可以找一个退役的前世界第一、大满贯得主女球员来当教练，很多男子顶尖
球员都在走这个路子，甚至穆雷还请了毛瑞斯莫。如果走这个路子，我觉得海宁是不错
的人选，一来跟卡洛斯技术路线类似；二来玛莎小威这些人她都熟悉，也知道如何击败
；三来她在这个位置待过，又同是女人，应该能在经验和心理上给李娜很多帮助。 | Y*******o
