Indeed, Simon has tasted both victory and defeat in an incredible 16 five-
set matches dating back to Australian Open 2011. Of those, he has won 10,
and lost six - an impressive record.
Many players may wilt physically or mentally as a match extends the distance
. Yet in Simon's case, he grew in strength as he went head-to-head with
Mahut. " I never managed to play all that well except in the fourth and in
the fifth, and you can see there is a difference. I didn't serve any better
during the fifth set, but I hit the ball with more power," he explained.
At Roland-Garros two years ago, he played three five-setters in that one
tournament alone; after beating both Lleyton Hewitt and Sam Querrey in five
en route to the fourth round, he then fell to Roger Federer 6-3 in the fifth
in their last-16 encounter. It was his second five-set match against the
Swiss legend; at Melbourne Park four years ago, he also fell to Federer in
five, in a dramatic match on Rod Laver Arena.
