that Djokovic didn't play at his best, well, he wasn't allowed to. Even on
baseline rallies he was being dominated including that monstrous 30 plus
stroke rally, one of the longest ever in a Wimbledon final. But he won the
tie breaks and that's what counted in the end.
All Federer needed to do was to get one good 1st serve on either of those
two match points in the 5th set. And it would not have been unexpected as he
had served his way beautifully throughout and indeed during that game. On
the 1st match point Djokovic sent in a superb deep return which Federer
could only send back with no real pace. But it was the 2nd one which will
rankle Federer as he set up a short ball on his forehand following a decent
2nd serve. 9 times out of 10 he would have placed it deep and got a weak
reply which would have been swatted away. But he hit it a little too short
and got passed. Djokovic got really lucky there.
Overall no question who was the better player. Federer dominated even from
the back but lost on account of those 3 tiebreakers. He didn't even face a
break point till the 4th set. Reminds me of the football world cup quarter
final last year between Brazil and Belgium. Brazil had all the vital numbers
in their favour except that they got only 1 goal to the Belgian's 2. In
sports sometimes the better team or player can end up losing simply because
they failed to capitalize on their superiority. But Federer will be
confident knowing he has the game even at his age to beat Djokovic and Nadal
anywhere except clay.
