l**a 发帖数: 32 | 3 Below is what I have found out on applying for a visa to Australia in the US:
1. Find out what kind of visa you should apply at
http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/
For conference/meetings/seminars, general information can be found at
http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/_pdf/general-events.pdf
2. Application forms
If you hold a Chinese passport, you need to apply for Business (Short Stay)
visa (Subclass 456) — paper-based applications. You can find links to the
application form, check list etc. on the pp. 2-3 in the general-events.pdf
file.
Form 456 is a pdf file with interactive fields. You can fill most of the
fields and then save the form (my acrobat allows me to do so). The only
exception I have found seem to be signature and you have to sign manually.
The form allows you to put a credit card number to pay for the visa
application fee. You can find the business visa charges at
http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/990i/business-visits.htm
3. Application method
If you are in the US and apply for visa through mail, you can find the
correct office below. If you apply in person, you can go to any office but
most offices (except at DC) require appointments.
http://www.usa.embassy.gov.au/whwh/Consulates.html
If you apply through the embassy in DC, the following links provides more
details about the address to mail application to and the return method:
http://www.usa.embassy.gov.au/whwh/DIAC_lodgement.html
4. I have not figured out the following:
(i) whether one needs to send original passport or a certified a copy will
do. If latter, what pages of passport are needed?
The contact phone number listed has a Canadian area code. I did not call
that number. Instead, I submitted an e-mail inquiry through the following
link
http://www.immi.gov.au/contacts/forms/americas/
(ii) How long it takes to get the visa |
f******e 发帖数: 465 | 4 You need a visa stamp on your passport, right? That means you have to send
in the original passport.
As for how long it takes, I believe their website mentions the usual
turnaround time (or not?) It certainly depends on the season. I believe it
would take a little longer in summer, but should be quite good at this time.
Even in summer, it probably is still not too bad. Good luck!

l**a 发帖数: 32 | 5 I am not sure whether the visa has to be stamped on the passport or would
there be a separate visa to be used in conjunction with the passport.
They have a table of typical processing time but it varies a lot depending
on risk. A couple days for those from "low risk" and a month for those from
"high risk." My guess is that Chinese in US would still be counted as in the
"high risk" group but I am not sure.

f******e 发帖数: 465 | 6 I'm not sure about others, but I have never seen any visa stamp separate
from the passport. In addition, I assume their application instructions
state that passport is required in your packet (which means the "passport").
I would be surprised if Chinese are counted as a high risk group.

It would be great if they only take a couple days for Chinese.

k**********e 发帖数: 35 | 9 I just applied and got my Australia visa. It took about a month.
You don't need to send your passport if you leave from US. They do it
electronically now. I called the Canada service center about all the
document requirement. I suggest you call that number too 1 905 280 1437.
They are pretty strict about what documents you need and the information on
the webpage is not all correct and up to date.

l**a 发帖数: 32 | 10 Thanks to "fulltime" and "keeps." To "keeps:" Did you apply electronically
and it still took a month?
Their reply to my e-mail mentioned notarized copy of proof of status (in the
US I suppose). I sent a letter of employment. Don't know whether that's
enough.Will see.

k**********e 发帖数: 35 | 11 You cannot apply electronically if you only have green card, but not a US
citizen. You have to mail all the material to the embassy in Washington. I
sent in the material by fedex in March and got confirmation in a week. But
they did not start reviewing mine until April.
You need notarized copy of your passport and green card. I don't think they
will accepted those material in email. For other material, if they ask for
them later, you can reply them in email with PDF attachment.
Again, I urge you to call the center. The person on the phone is very nice
and helpful, unlike other embassies I have called before. I'm just taking
vacation and you are going to a conference. Things may be different.
