During this JK event, I've witnessed many people that are willing to stand
up and voice their opinion. I'm Happy, I'm glad but I'm not satisfied
because we're not at the finish line yet.
One thing to be clear about is that even after JK apologized sincerely or
getting fired, ABC apologized and Disney apologized, it does not mean that
we all go our separate ways and remain silent again. To me, JK event is just
the beginning of our march toward EQUALITY (For those of you think you're
living a good life and gets treated the same as all your peers. PLEASE OPEN
YOUR EYES, how many people do you know that deserves promotion but gets
bumped aside by other less qualified people? Of course a significant of us
Chinese people are not good at expressing our thoughts and back away from
conversations, but there are plenty of us that are good communicators that
still don't get the same treatment.)
If you just browse around bbs, you'll find plenty of people wanting change
but don't know how. You see plenty of slogans such as "大家联合起来”,“团
结”,“交流”。 This is good, but it doesn't tell me what to do except
there's a desire. After a while, you get tire of these words and you'll
ignore them.
Below are some of the things that can be done and it'll have an effect
eventually. Remember we all have to start from somewhere, Rome was not built
in one day, Civil Rights movement lasted for years, some might argue it's
still ongoing. 星星之火可以燎原。
1. Stop spending all day in your home, go out there and meet people. In
other words, 融入这个社会。If you mind your own business, then your
community will not mind to ignore you. Participate in local activities such
as 5k run, donation events, your neighbors will be on your side if they know
you.
2. Practice your presentation skill. Go to toastmaster.org, find your local
organizations and improve your leadership skill. It not only helps yourself,
but it'll be handy when you need to explain things during rallies.
3. VOTE. It still bothers me that Chinese people have such low turn out rate
(under 50% of all eligible voters, correct me if I'm wrong but I recall
reading it after the 2012 election). Politician are voted into office,
despite that they all claim they represent everyone, in truth, they only
represent those that can get him/her into office.
4. Join Groups. Yes, you are important. 人多力量大。10,000 people scatter
across the country voicing their opinion is less effective than the leader
of a group of 1,000 members voicing his/her opinion. Of course, that doesn't
mean the rallies we have this week is ineffective, but it's much easier for
the group to voice the opinion rather than organizing all these people.
Now comes the boring part you can skip, I'm just repeating what has been
said countless times. 华人在美国就是一盘散沙。It's sad, but it's true.
It's hard to find the next Martin Luther King of Chinese American, but if
you don't do take the first step, then it'll be less likely to occur. Your
actions might inspire someone that has potential to be the next MLK.
To conclude this message, I'll use Nike's Slogan - JUST DO IT. Nothing will
happen if you don't do anything about it. Stop thinking so much, taking
ideas here and there, do it even if it might be wrong later, you'll learn
from your mistake and be better the next time. |
