On October 16, 2013, ABC Network aired a segment of the Jimmy Kimmel Live
show, where Mr. Kimmel used a child to say "kill everyone in China," after
which he posed the question "should we allow the Chinese to live?"
Teaching children to kill is neither funny nor free speech. If a Muslim
child in the Middle East jokes about "killing everyone in the USA" on TV,
hardly anyone would find that amusing. Similarly, the Chinese American
community, historically a target of discrimination and hate-crimes, is
outraged by the irresponsibility displayed by Mr. Kimmel and ABC.
ABC’s decision to air the segment sparked a wave of protests by Chinese
Americans across the US. In response to the protests, ABC issued a series
of so-called "apologies," which defended the segment as harmless comedy and
further outraged Chinese Americans.
On Nov 9, we gathered in unprecedented number and strength, with more than
three thousand protestors, joined by dozens of elected officials and
community leaders, at San Francisco City Hall to protest against racism and
violence.
ABC issued its most recent apology shortly after our rally on Nov 9, but
backdated it to Nov 8, to make it appear to be issued before our rally.
In that apology, ABC admits that the segment should never have been aired,
but fails to identify those responsible. It also promises future safeguard
to prevent similar incidents, but without details about the safeguard or how
it has disciplined those responsible.
As organizers of the San Francisco Rally Against Racism on Nov 9, 2013, we
recognize the progress ABC has made in admitting its malicious broadcasting
and total lack of sensitivity. The apology appears to be more sincere than
its previous statements.
ABC’s image remains tarnished within the Chinese American community. ABC
has not detailed the disciplines it made to the adults responsible in the
airing of the segment. Neither has ABC fully explained its new protocols.
These are things that ABC and its parent company Disney are capable of doing
to make amends for the injuries they inflicted upon our communities.
We recognize ABC’s small step in the right direction. However, we urge ABC
to take more proactive and concrete steps in reaching out and listening to
the needs of the Asian American community. As we closely watch this
development, we reserve the right to explore all future options, including
legal and financial resolutions.
