Dear Ms.
Thank you for contacting me with your concerns regarding the resettlement of
Syrian refugees. I appreciate the opportunity to hear from you on this
important issue.
As you know, the Syrian Civil War has caused many Syrians to flee their
country. Many of these refuges are seeking shelter in the United States and
across Europe. The U.S. maintains a quota system for the resettlement of
refugees worldwide that is subdivided by region. For the Middle East region,
the U.S. anticipated accepting around 2,000 refugees from the Middle East
in the next year. However, the Obama Administration recently announced that
the U.S. would accept more refugees without consulting Congress. While
America is a compassionate nation, we must carefully balance our desire to
help those in need with the security of our citizens. The devastating
terrorist attacks that recently took place in France are further proof that
we must halt any refugee action until and unless we can thoroughly vet those
seeking to come here to ensure they are not taking advantage of a horrible
civil war to gain access to this nation to do us harm.
That's why even before the French attacks, I cosponsored two bills to stop
President Obama's refugee plan. Both HR 3573, the Refugee Resettlement
Oversight and Security Act and HR 3314, the Resettlement Accountability
National Security Act, would stop the Administration's refugee resettlement
plans by requiring Congress to vote on Syrian refugee resettlement plans and
would also mandate that the Department of Homeland Security, Director of
National Intelligence, and Federal Bureau of Investigation ensure that
security measures are in place and screening is effective. These bills give
Congress needed oversight of the president's refugee process and national
security. Rest assured I am actively working to protect the safety and
security of all Americans as this refugee process moves forward.
