chips.
Preflop:
MP miniraised to 40, BTN called 40, BB (me QcTs) called. I called because
MP has miniraised couple times and BTN is a (65/35) fish.
Flop: 4h9s9c Pot130
I don't think the board helped anyone. So I decided to pull out a tricky
play to steal the pot. Unfortunately it got too tricky and killed myself.
Let me try to explain what I did and what I was thinking.
First, I miniraised to see what happens. If I can pick up the pot, that
would be nice. In my experience, that happens sometime but not very often.
I was more trying to pretend I have 9 and was slowplaying it, if I found
out noboby else had 9. Because I was the blind, I thought that I have 9x is
believable, at least more believable than my opponents.
MP miniraised me again, and BTN called. Because MP loves to miniraise, here
my read is that he is trying to get more information and not slowplaying.
BTN is a calling station, and I was not concerned about him at this moment.
So, what should I do? MP either had two high cards or a pair. I decided
to 3bet to 180 to pretend I do have the 9. It was against two players
interested in the pot, so my move should have some credibility.
Now MP 4bet me again to 320, and no surprise that BTN folded. Ok, so he
does have a pair. Is it a big pair or small pair? My read of his frequent
miniraise preflop says he has a small pair. My guess then was that he has
something between 55 and 88, and he probably thinks I have 4 or a small
pocket pair too. What should I do now?
I thought about calling here and raising again on turn. That could look
like I have a set or even boat and was trying to get all his chips in step
by step. But I don't want to indeed got him pot committed. There is
already 4betting here, and there is really no need to hide strengh anymore
if I do have the 9. So I shove. I had him covered. He had 1110 left, and
the pot is 640. My thinking is that my 5 bet should be enough to force him
to fold his pair, even if not I still have two over cards working for me.
If my read is correct, I should have >>50% chance to pick up the pot right
now and if not I still have 12 outs that gives me another 25%.
After thinking for a while, MP called my all-in, and my hand didn't improve
on turn and river. MP won with pocket 88.
In retrospect, I made quite a few mistakes. First of all, I shouldn't bluff
so early in the game, especially not an all-in bluff. It is better to be
tight and let fishes fight themselves out. Second, I know I love tricky
playes. This had happened many times that I read my opponent correctly and
thought I could bluff him off but didn't work. I did have learned to limit
my imagination somewhat. Hey, but this is $20 table, I thought it could be
different. Third, my AA two hands earlier didn't help my image. If I showed
it, my move might get more respect. |
